Description

HUBCAP # w13olds1985_1

This photo shows you a 13 inch Oldsmobile hubcap made for Calais (and other) models from roughly 1982 thru 1986.  The above gallery images show further details of this nice stainless steel, wire wheel type hubcap design.  Design details, of hubcap # w13olds1985_1,  include crossing wires around the perimeter.  The center hub has an insert holder with a round OD and ID; and has a removable plastic insert with a colored Oldsmobile rocket emblem.

For this 1980’s Oldsmobile hubcap ,  the weight is about 5.3 pounds each.  The wheel attachment method is a carbon steel ring clip design.  The design has no back plate .  Inventory for this attractive design is almost of the highest quality but is somewhat limited in quantity.

[ An alternate design, with a crest emblem, is hubcap #  w13olds1983_7  .  So both designs are a 13 inch Oldsmobile hubcap ; and both are wire wheel type hubcap .]

So this original design had a lock ability to minimize theft.   But a lock hardware supply was not necessarily actually supplied.  So, this wire wheel hubcap supply, for you, does not include locking hardware in the scope.  Nor do we have such locking hardware for this design….see NOTE below for more discussion on use of such hardware.

NOTE     Many owners find the locking hardware inconvenient.  First one typically installs a three prong carbon steel hardware (bracket) to the wheel under the wheel lug nuts.  Second, the hubcap is installed as normally done [but don’t install the center insert yet].  Third, insert the locking bolt thru the insert area and screw into the locking bracket  [which has a fixed nut in its design].   Last, attach the insert to complete the task.  Do the reverse to remove the hubcap.   However,  remember, this locking bolt (typically) requires a special wrench [not supplied] to tighten and loosen it.  [Theft becomes more unlikely.]  The challenge hence being access to such a special wrench and also keeping track of loose inserts and locking bolts during such efforts of simply changing a flat tire.

If you find any of the above discussion a bit confusing, a great general article is under Hubcap Data.  And, more specific discussions, in this article, include the following topics.

1   History and definition article on the word “Hubcap” .  The article covers an interesting discussion of how hubcaps started out as an all metal construction. That later transitioned to a partial metal and plastic designs.  And, then, an all plastic construction appeared.

2   Hubcap Identification Systems .  This article covers the classic Hollander Numbering system.  And the newer Hubcap Hilton Numbering system is also covered.

3   Hubcap Features .  This article covers several full size hubcap designs and wire wheel designs.  Also covered are various detail attachment (hubcap to wheel) designs, trim rings, and locking hardware.
